Thomas William DeWitt,79 of Beardstown, died, Saturday, March 5, 2016 at Heritage Health in Beardstown.
He was born September 24th, 1936 in Beardstown, the son of Seneca and Stella Mikesell Dewitt.
He married Judy Kay Baer May 7th, 1966 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beardstown.
He is survived by his wife Judy Dewitt of Beardstown; three sons Thomas William (wife Marcie) DeWitt Jr. of Louisville, KY., Ted Charles DeWitt of Seward, AK., and Timothy Michael (wife Jessica) DeWitt of Beardstown; eight grandchildren Brentan, Mallory, Meghan, Benjamin, Laina, Emma, Jack and Elsa and one brother Jack (wife Pauline) DeWitt of Springfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Sidney, and three sisters Maxine, Dorothy, and Irene.
Tom graduated from Beardstown High School in the class of 1955, In the early years he worked on the tug boats before his service in the United States Army. Tom was a Laborer for RD Lawrence construction for 25+ years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping and mushroom hunting. His time spent in his garden brought his so much joy and he earned the title of the Tomato Man. Tom’s hobbies included selling his produce and night crawlers, Tanning hides, and making leather moccasins. Mostly he cherished the time spent with is family.
Memorial services will be held at 2 PM, Wednesday, March 9th, 2016 at Colwell Memorial Home in Beardstown with Pastor Matt Haberman officiating. There will be no burial. Following the memorial service, Military Honors will be conducted by Guthrie-Pierce VFW Post #1239 of Beardstown. The family will meet with friends one hour prior to the services at the Memorial Home.
Memorials have been suggested to American Cancer Society or Cass/Schuyler Area Hospice.
