Stephen Edward "Pitter" Patterson, 70, of Beardstown, died Thursday, April 10, 2025, surrounded by his family at home.
He was born January 1, 1955, in Jacksonville, the son of Raymond Howard and Mary Patricia Barry Patterson. He married the love of his life, Tracey Barker, on June 8, 1996, and she survives in Beardstown.
He is also survived by three sons, Tylor Patterson of Beardstown, Trenton Patterson (wife Kay) of Springfield, and Dylan Patterson of Beardstown; three grandchildren, Liam, Charlotte, and Eleanor; and a brother, Tony Patterson of Peoria. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jimmy Patterson.
Steve graduated from Jacksonville High School in the class of 1973. He joined the United States Air Force and later served with the Air National Guard. He dedicated himself to Beardstown, the town he loved dearly. He was employed in many roles over the years. Steve started in law enforcement as a police officer for Beardstown Police Department, served as Beardstown Police Chief, was later the Mayor of Beardstown, and served on the CUSD #15 School Board. He was passionate about buying and selling cars and used his talents for Ballpark Motors and Jennings. Some might say he was like the Energizer Bunny, always going, going, going. Steve was a member of Elks Lodge #1007, Shriner's, Mason's, and Guthrie-Pierce VFW Auxiliary Post #1239.
In his younger years, he enjoyed cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals and attending Elks Bus trips. He watched Spaghetti Westerns when he was home and not out and about. His time spent at the Cabin with friends was among his best memories. When someone needed help, regardless of what it might be, Pitter made it happen. He had a "guy" for every situation. His heart was bigger than he was. Most of all, his family was his pride and joy. His time with each of them truly was the highlight of his life.
