Sandra Susan “Sandy” Wilcox, age 78 of Beardstown, died Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at her home.
She was born November 20, 1942 in Beardstown, the daughter of Edward and Olive Southwell Smith. She married John B. “Johnny” Wilcox on March 1, 1959 and he preceded her in death on September 6, 2015.
She is survived by two children Cindia (husband Steve) Smith of Beardstown and Scott Dale (wife Teresa) Wilcox of Greeville, SC; seven grandchildren Lora Barron, David and Abigail Barron, Sarah and Dakota Smith, and Parker and Nicky Wilcox; four great grandchildren Elizabeth “Betsy” Tangman, Lily Barron, Maddox Cluney, and Stevie Smith; three sisters Ruth (wife Dee Richardson) Smith of Torrance, CA, Marie Bunker of Redondo Beach, CA, and Mary Smith of Evansville, IN; two brothers Victor (wife Nikki) Smith of Frederick and Burr Smith of Beardstown; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son John Wilcox, two brothers Nolan Lorenzo “Lanny” Smith and Edward Mitchell Smith, and a foster brother Johnny Aten.
Sandy was in the Beardstown Alumni Class of 1960 after earning her GED. She was first a wife and mother but also a savvy businesswoman earning many awards with her ability to sell Avon for decades. Sandy enjoyed the great outdoors and had a love for music; playing the bass guitar and singing alongside her husband or just jamming with the gang. She had a talent for baking and decorating cakes, making elderberry salve, and composing a family cookbook. She also answered to the name Nanny Goat, or you might have known Sandy and her husband as “Waterbug” and “Trader” on the CB Radio. Sandy will be greatly missed by all those she leaves behind.
Cremation rites have been accorded. The family will meet with friends from 5-7 PM Friday at Colwell Memorial Home in Beardstown. No formal services will be held.
