Russell Coats

Russell Eugene Coats, age 79 of Beardstown, died Thursday, November 5, 2020 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

He was born April 28, 1941 in Arenzville, the son of Harry and Willia Conner Coats.

He is survived by seven children Kim (husband Bill) Jones, James (significant other Connie Stratton) Coats, Russell (wife Lisa Filiczkowski) Coats, JoLynn White, Willia (husband Paul) Newlin, Melynda (husband Andy) McKeever, and Reagan (wife Angel) Coats; 19 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren; two brothers Robert and James (wife Vickie) Coats; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Dorothy Emerick and Joyce Fishel, and six brothers William, Milton, Herbert, Landon, Harry, and Jack Coats.

Russell graduated from Arenzville High School. Hard work was always a part of his life. He began working as a deckhand on barges and later joined the Millwright Union working in construction. Russell enjoyed his time as a Millwright and built many structures over the years. However, he missed working on the river and knew through hard work, he would reach the rank of Boat Captain, in which he earned and retired.

Russell was always busy. He enjoyed being around people, camping, or attending bluegrass festivals and sharing his appreciation of music with his children. He was a humble man who cared for everyone and wanted the best for them. Russell also knew there was a time for relaxation and partaking with a favorite beverage. He was a proud father and grandfather whose legacy will continue with them.

Cremation rites have been accorded and services will be held a later date. Colwell Memorial Home in Beardstown is in charge of arrangements.
