Matthew Jon McGinnis

Matthew Jon McGinnis, age 41, of Astoria, died at his home on Friday, March 7, 2025.

He was born April 1, 1983, in Rushville, the son of Virgil McGinnis and Darla Kay Koepp Moses.

He is survived by his father Virgil McGinnis (wife Mary) of Anderson Lake; Sanna Estes (husband Bret) of Rushville; four children Jordan Matthew and Kennadey Elizabeth Layne, Ryatt Jon, and Reed Monty McGinnis; three brothers Kenny McGinnis (companion Tracy Shaw) of Astoria, Luke McGinnis (wife Rachel) of Rushville, and Jeff McGinnis of Astoria; sister Chelsea Thomas (husband James) of Anderson Lake; a step-brother Zachary Mibbs (wife Morgan) of Havana; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mom, his grandfather Ralph McGinnis, Grandmother Annie Park, and an aunt Barb Crenshaw.

Matt attended Pekin Schools. He was a volunteer firefighter for the Browning Fire Department. His passion was the Illinois River. He spent sixteen years as a deckhand and commercial fisherman working for locals, which allowed him to spend his time on the river. When he wasn't working, he loved fishing, mushroom hunting, and nature. He was a jokester, and those who knew him knew him to be a very good person with a heart of gold. He was an avid Cardinals fan and also a fan of his children's activities. He loved his kids and nieces and nephews and was very proud of them all. His late-night cheesecake-baking adventures with Kennadey will be a memory that will never be forgotten.

Funeral services will be held at Noon on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at Colwell Memorial Home in Beardstown, with Pastor Matt Haberman officiating. Burial will be in Browning Cemetery. The family will meet with friends two hours prior to the services at the memorial home. Matt would have wanted everyone to "Come as you are," so please dress casually.
