Martin Pond

Martin E. “Marty” Pond, 79 of rural Virginia, passed away surrounded by his family, Thursday, May 7, 2015 at his home.

He was born July 7, 1935 in Morgan County, the son of Landis “Tuck” and Doris Battefeld Pond. He married Mary Elizabeth Davidsmeier on September 2, 1956 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Beardstown and she preceded him in death on December 29, 2014.

He is survived by his three daughters Kathy (husband Bill) Wellenkamp of Beardstown, Brenda (husband Dave) Gibson of Petersburg, and Amy (husband Donny) Lancaster of Beardstown; five grandchildren Phillip (companion Ashley Richardson) Wellenkamp, Justin (wife Lindsey) Wellenkamp, Breann (fiancé Rob McGovern) Osmer, Luke (companion Sierra Allen) Osmer, and Donovan Lancaster; four great grandchildren Emily Pratt, Reid and Piper Wellenkamp, and Aubrey Osmer; two brothers Charles (wife Rita) Pond of Jacksonville and Roger Pond of Meredosia; one sister Carol Gillis of Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and two brothers Joe and Keith Pond.

Martin attended school in Morgan County and was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bluff Springs. He retired from Oscar Mayer-Cargill in Beardstown, and could easily be found working on cars at Osmer Enterprises in Beardstown or at his home in his spare time. Martin enjoyed the time he spent with his Wednesday Night Bowling Team in Beardstown, drag racing in his younger years and visiting Benny’s pizza.

Memorial services will be held at 10 AM Monday, May 11, 2015 at Colwell Memorial Home in Beardstown. Burial will be in the Beardstown City Cemetery. The family will meet with friends from 5-7 PM Sunday at the memorial home
