Dorothy Smith

Dorothy Marie Smith, 95 of Beardstown, died Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at Heritage Health in Beardstown.

She was born November 18, 1919 in Nortonville the daughter of James Daugherty and Marie Clark. She married Clarold “Bing” Smith and he preceded her in death.

Surviving is her son Terry Smith of San Ramon, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Dorothy graduated from Beardstown High School in the class of 1938. She had worked for the Illinois Star Gazette after high school for a couple of years, and then in the 1990’s she was the author of the popular “Bits and Pieces” column for the newspaper. Dorothy was a member of First United Methodist Church in Beardstown. Beardstown was her home. She loved living here and she would have been the last person to leave if something were ever to happen in Beardstown. She cherished being with her family and friends, having cookouts, and she could sing, and in high school possibly be mistaken for, Kate Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Thursday, June 11, 2015 at Colwell Memorial Home in Beardstown. Burial will be in the Beardstown City Cemetery. An informal visitation will be held from 5-7 PM Wednesday at the memorial home.

Memorials have been suggested to First United Methodist Church.
